<p>The unit was established as the 440th Troop Carrier Wing at Wold-Chamberlain MAP, MN (later Minneapolis St Paul IAP) in June 1949 with C-46s and various trainers. The 440th was activated for operational duty in May 1951 and redesignated 440th Fighter-Bomber Wing in June 1952, moving to Fort Snelling, MN. The unit returned to the Reserves with the F-51, T-33 and F-80 assigned. The designation reverted to the 440th TCW in September 1952, when the unit flew the C-119 and moved to General Mitchell Field, WI two months later. The 440th converted to C-130As in January 1971 and upgraded to C-130Hs in 1989.
